Mayor Pope Acknowledges National Social Work Month

Lubbock, TX – March 4, 2022
On Friday, March 4, Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope issued this statement, “March is National Social Work Month, and is a special time to thank all Social Workers for their dedication and care for vulnerable members of our community. Social Workers provide support and advocate for people of all ages to make a positive difference in their lives. Thank you for your service to improve and aid those who need help. Your acts of service do not go unnoticed.”
The theme for National Social Work Month is “The Time is Right for Social Work.”
This highlights how social workers have enriched our society for more than a century and how their services continue to be needed today.
Social workers contribute to the City of Lubbock in many ways. They work in our schools and our hospitals, in the local hospice agencies, at our children’s homes, in the private defender’s office, at the Montford Unit, at the Free Clinic, at Stages of Recovery, at Adult Protective Services, at Child Protective Services, and in so many other agencies throughout the city. Social workers in Lubbock touch hundreds of lives each day.
People become social workers because they have a strong desire to help others and make our society a better place to live for all. Social work is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). There are almost 720,000 professional social workers in our nation, but that number is expected to rise to more than 800,000 by 2030, BLS said. Social workers have helped drive significant, positive changes in our nation. Social workers such as social reformer Jane Addams, former Labor Secretary Frances Perkins, and civil rights leaders Dorothy Height, Whitney Young and Ida B. Wells have pushed for voting rights, equal rights, Social Security, unemployment insurance, and other programs.
Each day social workers empower Lubbock citizens to live life to their fullest potential. Social workers try to improve living conditions for all. We urge you to thank the social workers that you know and help support the profession.
