During cold weather events, like the one Lubbock just experienced, burst pipes can go undetected due to the expansion of water when it freezes. Once the temperature begins to rise, burst pipes and leaks reveal themselves.
Frozen Pipe Detection• Sudden drop in water pressure.• Lack of water flowing from one or more fixtures.• Unusual cold spots on walls, ceilings, or floors where pipes run.• New water stains, damp drywall, peeling paint, musty odors, or small puddles.• Banging, whistling, or gurgling noises when water fixtures are turned on.
Next Steps• Locate your water meter box: residential water meter boxes are found either behind or in front of the residence. The lid will either be round or rectangular. If you are unable to locate your meter box call Water Dispatch at 806.775.2588• Open the box: use a large flathead screwdriver to lift the meter box lid.• Locate the shutoff valve: this is a metal piece about 6 inches to 8 inches from the glass face of the meter. See diagram for visual guide.• Turn the valve off: line up the 2 tabs, both tabs have a hole punch, when the holes are lined up the water is off. See diagram below for a visual guide. If you need assistance shutting your water off call Water Dispatch at 806.775.2588• Fix leak / burst pipes: Residents are responsible for making repairs to all interior and exterior pluming as well as irrigation systems that connect to the pipes leading to the water meter box.
