Trump Administration Tries Again, Unlawfully, to Exclude Immigrant Communities from Census Count

WASHINGTON – In response to President Donald Trump’s memorandum that would eliminate undocumented immigrants from final U.S. Census tallies, thus lowering the amount of federal funds and political representation given to states, Nicole Melaku, Executive Director for the National Partnership of New Americans, released the following statement: “The Trump administration’s unconstitutional memorandum is a desperate and pathetic attempt to discourage and stamp out immigrants from being counted in the U.S. Census. The U.S. Supreme Court has already struck down the administration’s attempt to ask about a person’s immigration status in the Census as unlawful. This is nothing more than a last-ditch effort at fomenting fear among immigrants when we should be encouraging them to fill out the census forms. It is also an unabashed attempt to power grab through political gerrymandering that excludes our immigrant neighbors and loved ones. Instead of distracting from its incompetence in response to the COVD-19 pandemic, the administration should focus on addressing the rampant virus sweeping through the nation, with more than 140,000 deaths to date.”
