NALEO Educational Fund Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Decision in Brnovich v. DNC

6-3 ruling further weakens Voting Rights Act; thwarts access to the ballot box for Latinos and voters of color

WASHINGTON, D.C. The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund today released the following statement from CEO Arturo Vargas following the Supreme Court’s decision today on Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee: “The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Brnovich v. DNC is a blow to our nation’s electoral system, the sacred right to vote, Arizona’s burgeoning Latino electorate, and voters across the nation. The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Arizona’s restrictive voting policies significantly undermines the federal Voting Rights Act at a time when states are enacting measures which create unfair barriers to Latino access to the ballot box. This decision will embolden states to continue their efforts. “Since its enactment by Congress in 1965, the VRA has been a powerful tool to fight discriminatory voting laws and practices, and it has helped ensure that Latinos and other under-represented groups can participate fairly in the electoral process. The Supreme Court decision weakens our democracy by making it more difficult to combat efforts to restrict the fundamental right to vote. “We must come together to help ameliorate this damage. We urge members of Congress to continue this work in a bipartisan manner and pass legislation such as the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to strengthen the VRA and make our democracy more responsive to all of our nation’s voices.”
