NALEO Educational Fund Condemns Impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas

“This effort distracts Congress from carrying out the real work our nation needs,” reiterates NALEO and NALEO Educational Fund CEO Arturo Vargas.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials

(NALEO) Educational Fund today released the following statement from Chief Executive Officer

Arturo Vargas after the U.S. House of Representatives vote to impeach U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas:

“NALEO Educational Fund is disappointed in the House’s actions to impeach Secretary Mayorkas. This effort distracts Congress from carrying out the actual work our nation needs, including agreeing on a federal budget, averting a government shutdown, and addressing a wide range of issues affecting the well-being of Latinos and all Americans.

“This impeachment also undermines the bipartisan collaboration required to craft legislation that would ultimately achieve immigration reform, a goal envisioned by the NALEO and NALEO Educational Fund Boards and articulated in our principles for immigration reform. These principles call for a sound and humane approach to immigration enforcement and policies that would provide a path to U.S. citizenship for certain immigrants and their families.

“It is deeply disillusioning that members of Congress chose to use valuable time and resources on a futile impeachment effort instead of coming together to pursue bipartisan, practical, and effective solutions to the wide range of issues facing the nation — including immigration. NALEO Educational Fund calls on the Senate to quickly resolve and end this effort to remove Secretary Mayorkas from office.”
