Lubbock County Democrats Statement on Abbott Veto

"We are disappointed in Gov. Greg Abbott's decision to veto from the state budget a program that would have created a statewide program to protect the elderly and incapacitated who are neglected or swindled by court-appointed guardians. Lubbock County is ground zero for this issue and the governor has failed the people of Lubbock County with this action. Many, including Ms. Rosamond Bradley have been stuck in guardianship because Lubbock County Judge Tom Head refused to restore their legal rights. Also, a married couple from Lubbock bilked elderly people and their estates of thousands with no oversight from the state, Lubbock County commissioners, or Judge Head. The bill authored to solve this problem passed the Senate by 30-1 vote but Gov. Abbott called it "unnecessary bureaucracy." We join Sen. Judith Zaffirini, the bill's author, in her frustration with the governor's veto. Its more clear than ever: Republican from Gov. Abbott to Lubbock County judge Tom Head and county commissioner won't defend the most vulnerable in Texas or in Lubbock and refuses to stop waste, greed, and gross incompetence. Lubbock Democrats remain committee to seeing greater oversight of the guardianship process in this state and especially in Lubbock County and urge both state government and county commissioner to get to work on behalf of our neighbors and real West Texas values."
